Reminder to US 322 (Conchester Highway) subscribers: The daily, off-peak lane restrictions that have been in place in the U.S. 322 work area will continue through most of 2018. PennDOT will discontinue issuance of weekly news releases for these recurring, routine restrictions, instead sending out periodic reminders such as this. However, we will continue to issue news releases as needed when there are changes to the current schedule and for other information about the project.

Lane Closures, Stoppages Wednesday Night for Smithbridge Road Bridge Construction

May 7, 2018  –  Motorists using U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) in Delaware County will encounter lane closures and periodic 15-minute stoppages  Wednesday night for beam placement on a section of the new bridge over Smithbridge Road in Concord Township, Delaware County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today. The new bridge construction is part of the ongoing $62.2 million project to widen and reconstruct a U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to Clayton Park Drive.

Nighttime lane restrictions and 15-minute traffic stoppages will be in place at the Smithbridge Road overpass, located at about the mid-point of the 2.6-mile work zone, from 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 9, until 5:00 AM Thursday, May 10. The restrictions will allow crews to position equipment and lift and secure the deck beams for the eastbound section of the new bridge.

If weather forces cancellation of the planned operation, the beam placement and resultant restrictions and stoppages will take place from 7:00 PM Thursday, May 10, to 5:00 AM Friday, May 11.

In addition, flagger-directed, alternating single-lane restrictions will continue on Mondays through Thursdays, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, through various work areas along the construction zone. These daytime and overnight operations will continue through late fall.

Motorists should expect significant delays on U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway), allow extra time for travel through the work areas, or use an alternate route. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Chester County, is the general contractor on the project which is financed with 80 percent federal and 20 percent state funds.

PennDOT began construction last spring on the first-of-two mainline projects to widen and reconstruct a 6.7-mile section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) from U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike) to just east of Route 452 (Market Street) in Concord, Bethel and Upper Chichester townships, Delaware County. Work on the first mainline section of U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) is scheduled to be completed in late 2020.

Engineering design is advancing for the widening and reconstruction of the eastern section (Section 102) of the highway from just east of Clayton Park Drive to just east of Route 452 (Market Street). Construction on this section is expected to start in 2019.

An additional contract to replace the U.S. 322 (Conchester Highway) bridge over the CSX railroad and Bethel Road as well as improvements to the adjacent Bethel Road Interchange is under design.
