Glen Mills Schools 125th Anniversary
|Date:||September 19, 2014|
The Glen Mills Schools (GMS) is celebrating its 125th campus anniversary on Friday, September 19. Community members are invited to join in the festivities by cheering on the Bulls as they battle H.D. Woodson in a football matchup to be followed by a spectacular fireworks display! Game begins at 5:30pm.
Founded in 1826 as the Philadelphia House of Refuge, GMS is the oldest existing school of its type in the United States. The campus moved to Glen Mills 125 years ago, and continues its tradition of nurturing the academic and emotional growth of youth whose potential might otherwise be lost.
Between academic classes, students independently move across campus, cheerfully waving at passing staff members or visitors. They compete against local high schools in 15 varsity sports and enjoy homecoming, sports award ceremonies and a cap-and-gown graduation every June. Whether it is maintaining the grounds of the award-winning golf course or crafting a pair of eyeglasses in the optical lab, students also build hands-on skills in one of 25 career and technical education programs. This rich educational tradition has been incredibly successful. Just last year, GMS presented 137 GED certificates, 2,311 career and technical education certificates and 31 high school diplomas. Alumni have continued their education incollege and entered the workforce to become business owners, teachers, professional athletes and more.
